When we look back:

The first step we took was to come up with the skeletal sketch of a gameplan. What needs to be done first , at what amount amount of time and in what detail. The initial decision was to do an extensive research on the properties/capabilities of clay and also on a field research on possible markets. The Ideation on the products were to be based on the research. Rather than a high variety of prototypes and choosing from it, we were thinking of choosing a select few from the ideation stage and putting the maximum effort into it to making it perfect.

Unfortuantely , nothing went as planned. We were advised to do the research alongside with the ideation due to apparent lack of time. Thus most of the initial ideas where based on the properties of clay we already knew, which ended up in us having only aesthetic innovations rather than functional design. And , in a even more sad turn of events, most of the functional designs we did come up with, were proved futile in later research!! So the first week felt more like blind ideation, and we were forced to shift focus a bit too much.

Another factor which forced us to limit ourselves a lot was the necessity to test the product in the five week period. A lot of the ideas required adequate amount of time to be executed, and because of the time clay products takes to be dried and burned, most of our rather more ambitious projects were nipped in the bud. Thus almost all of our final ideas had to be either small scale singular products or/and products based already existing products.

The lack of initial research on the market and also the proposed research on in-demand goods which could be (with some tweaks) made out of clay, we were going nowhere with the other half of our research which was to find a stable demand on a mass producible item which would give narayanpura people a stable source of income. Examples we could come up with was Door nobs made of clay, Shooting skits made of clay etc.

Seeing that the ideation part of it was going nowhere , because most of the products we were coming up with seemed to be using clay due to forcing rather than necessity, some of us went to popular design showrooms in Bangalore to get a feel of what is usually bought by the public.

Most of the more expensive and lucrative items did seem to be more of aesthetic value than functional and only common sense was needed to understand that this would be true for terracotta also. With its extreme brittleness and sad tensile strength, clay would be a horrible replacement for anything made out of plastic or metal if u r trying to better the functional value. Finally we came up on the decision to make Asthetic products base on the functional properties of clay. I.E For the gel wax candle we made with the clay idol inside, the ability of clay to resist heat and not change form is used. Also one other major advantage clay had over everything else was that it was cheap.

When we finally got into executing most of the procucts, we realised that clay had an even worse disadvantage: It had worse structural strength. Stuff you make out of clay is very suspectible to collapse if you don’t follow a lot of structural construction rules. It was not as versatile as plastic and metal. (now this was when we came to full realisation of how the decision to do research alongside was a big big mistake as it created humongous wastage of time.)

But thankfully some of the products did make it through this excessive screening process and we were also able to improvise on it. One aspect of terracotta we fully utilised was the ability to take heat. This made it a very cheap crockery material without compromising on functionality or looks. Also the water absorption qualities made it a good material for bathroom stuff like soap dishes, soap dispensers, also the texture and the colour gave it a nice earthy feel.

Start Shooting!!!!

Our assignment is to make two movies , one documentary and one fiction, on any form of livelyhood .

We decided to do the documentary on a local garage for motorbikes, and the fiction was on a tea shop owner.

Documentry..

We chose Ravi motors , opposite the Yelahanka bus stand . Our aim was to show the kind of mood that the space pocesses , about the kind of people , often we noticed that the customers dealt with the owner only , therefore through this documentry we wanted to concentrate on the real guys ' the mechanics ' the kind of work , friendships , their likes , dislikes and most importantly dreams .

Fiction ..

Our fiction story revolves around 2 people with two entirely different lives , first a man who owns a chai kadai almost in the middle of no where , and has got accustomed to a mundane boredom and of not having much customers to provide for or to talk to . The other happens to be a BPO employee who is so restless and is overpowered by her busy life and is not happy with her situation of being in a new place and is very uncomfortable with a nagging boss to work for . The girl , simply walks into his shop one morning , and keeps blabbering about herself ,the man at first finds it irritating to find an extra chirpy customer but then slowly gets fascinated by her talks of a world beyond his tiny shop .By the time she is done with the cup of chai she leaves in a hurry , which leaves the poor chaii waala with a newfound sense of restlessness and a sense of regret for not having being able to talk to her ...

Our process of ideation for the resulting ideas took us from a regular newspaper boy to a girl and a guy who are not so well off but at night they convert themselves into page 3 socialites

We brought into use many aspects of our film appreciation class and tried an approach by providing bothing directly to teh audience , We even discussed the use and creation of symbolic elements to make the movie more thought provoking.

We categorized our work according to our abilities , for instance I and Palak took up the task of writing of the scripts and dialogues and prompters during the shooting whereas Jit took up the task of working on the shot breakdowns , the camera angles and the shooting on field and akash took up the stupendous task of our time consuming editing.

OUR TIMELINE AND ITS BLOTCHES .......

Initially we set up our time table in a manner that we would research and choosing of field location on Saturday and Sunday and begin shooting at the garage on Monday , HOWEVER AS A RESULT OF SOME DRAWBACKS SUCH AS ,
faulty footage etc . We went again to our garage to refine our shots on tuesday . Tuesday too intially was assigned for our shoot at heritage , and soon we found ourselves not so happy with our fiction location.

We chose our actress and employed Jit as our chaii walla yet faced difficulties as we woke up to capture the morning hours as the kadaii we spoke to suddenly refused to co operate therefore that very morning we left to search for more places and landed up wandering near Heritage again where we could finally find a suitable chaii walla who could play his own role as well .
We had a lot of time constraints as we could have only shot the movie between 6 to 8 and our actress had to head to college afterwards . Due to the lack of a detailed shot break down , we had lots of arguments on field deciding camera angles and hence lost a lot of time in the process .
However the next day we prepared a detailed breakdown and hence could get some descent shots in the process , meanwhile we had begun editing on our documentry as well which after a careful evaluation of all the footage we acquired was given shape in the form of a script and followed .
The following day also saw some effective shooting in the morning followed by a very slow documentry editing .
However , some onfield shooting problems were ;

1)continuos intervention of customers.
2)continuos suggestions.
3)increased traffic with the growing morning hour.
4)difficulty in communicating with the chai waala .
5)during the change of teh environment sround us we encountered a lot of confusion in deciding which shot should be taken .
6)and time constraints .

After , which we began encountering problems such as landing up at the site and not finding the man and him wanting to leave the shop in the hands of someone else in order to head back to his hoem town for a personal engagement .

After which again we all stayed back to tackle the problems we were encountering with our film editing , however the last time we went to shoot at our field he refused and we landed up with a completely disconnected story , a completey defeated attitude and a 2Gb edited documentry which absolutely refuses to compress..
Tool: Aerated/Mango Juice/Milk

In the heat of the afternoon we walked around with refreshments. Offering people a choice between the 3. Most of the adults chose Mango juice over Pepsi. When asked why, they said its fruit juice and is healthy. Children preferred Pepsi. None of them went for milk.

Tool: Scooter/Sports Bike/Normal Bike

We had three two-wheelers parked in a row. An Activa-scooter, a Yamaha Libero, and a sporty R-15. We asked people to pose next to whichever bike they preferred. While half liked the Activa and half wanted to pose on the cool, new R-15, nobody chose the old and in-between Libero.

We had to go to a village in the outskirts of banglore called narayanpura to conduct a survey on the people living there. The main occupation of the people in Narayanpura is pottery. Our survey was aimed at understanding their way of life and also to figure out ignored rescourses which could be manipulated in abetter way.

Persona and scenario

No one knows where Jack is from. You can find him at the hottest party spots every weekend having a crazy time splurging on everything he can. People gossip that he might be just another one of those spoilt kids of a millionaire father. But he never likes talking about his life, and when you are talking with him, it is hard for you to control the conversation.
He is coolest and ,apparently, one of the richest dudes in town

Jaganath is not the usual roadside rural bumkin. The people of the locality had a hardtime understanding him. Though he never went to school, he was very intelligent and very skilled. He was self educated and was much better informed than most of the other villagers. Although he hardworking, he never took any of the ‘big’ jobs with monthly salaries. He always did most of the smaller jobs which he can finish off quickly, but he did many of them.
He was sarcastic and very rude to the other people. Though everyone appreciated his skill and
hardwork, very few actually liked him. What everyone wanted to know was where did he keep all his money. Cause, even though he earned a lot through his jobs, he lived a very poor life and spent only for his essentials.

WHERE DID ALL THE MONEY GO??

The Truth is…..

Jack and Jaganath

Is the same..

All the cash that Jaganath earned, he spent in the weekend partying , but he would always hit a saloon and change his looks and act like Jack. He pretends to be rich in front all the elite class, trying to make them jealous. It was always his dream to be very rich. But his pessimistic character stopped him from chasing his dream. He tried to make the other people jealous of him, because he only had contempt for those who had inherited their wealth.

Jack played his part to the core. He took part in every activity Jaganath would have thought foolish. Every guy envied him and every girl wanted him. But no one could ever figure out where he is from or what he does,
It looked like Jack and
Jaganath was gonna be two different people in front of others for ever.

Assignment 2

So, our second assignment included finding out the details and working of small enterprises in our environment and therefore in order to do so , we found ourselves lurking around the streets of Yelahanka , to find our lucky five .

We first came across a Konkani fast food joint call ‘Hegde’s ‘. Located amidst the residential area of Nagarjuna colony and SFS , this little open air food joint is run by an ex- army man who lives with his wife and daughter. He lives very close to this little place he has set up, in a tiny flat . He in known to find a lot of pleasure in providing quality yet, healthy food to people . He claims to have set up the business around 2 years back and has mostly targeted the students who get bored of eating unhealthy PG food .

His strategy involves a very close interaction with his customers (by serving most of the food himself , and taking extreme care even their very minute requirements of the customer ) and providing them good food at cheap rates . He tends to utilize most of the basic kitchen requirements such as the fridge , stove , blender ,water etc. and most importantly serves the delicious food in steel plates in order to add ‘ a homely touch ‘ .

They estimate and prepare food for at least , 25 customers on a daily basis . His most exclusive feature is to provide fish , at far cheaper rates than the market itself , which draws a lot of people from around the place . He is not only known for the delicious non- veg food but his place is also a delight for a vegetarian . He also provides with ‘Kokam’ which he apparently gets from North Canara which is almost 450 Kms. Away and which also happens to be his native place. He is so particular about the health factor , that he refuses to even provide the usual soft drinks that every other eatery provides .He buys the fresh vegetables from the old Yelahanka town markets , and the tasty fish from different markets , he even offered us to provide us crab , for 150 Rs. When it is avalible at around 650 in the market .

Hegde uncle as he is lovingly called by us srishti-ites usually provides delicious meals which are cooked by his daughter and an attendant , and is very carefully supervised by his lovely wife . Off late, he finds a strong competition from the other local eateries providing junk rolls etc . Yet , takes up the challenge of providing a much healthier and tastier version to us all , and therefore asked us to spread the word , clearly he does not believe in putting up carrying out a lot of fancy endorsements . He believes that good quality food will always speak for itself .

Hegde uncle does not believe in the wastage of food , and encourages his customers to do the same , and practises prudence in the preparation of the food as well. Although , offlate he has been experiencing a downfall in the number of customers due to the busy money deficit schedules of the srishti students and is running the business at a very low profit margin (He earns around 500 rupees on an average per day) . However he still aims at increasing his fan base in and around the place with his good intensions .

We next headed towards our friendly neighbor-hood chemist next, famous amongst us for offering ice-cream with medicines. He has studied pharmacy and started the shop almost 3 yrs ago. He also teaches pharmacy and medicine in colleges along with running his shop. He usually handed over the shop to an employee in the mornings, when he was teaching in colleges, and himself came in the afternoon to take over and help keep the shop open till late night. Now, since his only employee left to pursue further studies, he is left to work himself. It means having to keep the shop closed during the mornings and afternoons, till he finds himself another employee. Although it does mean losing out on some business.

The location and geography of his shop is a good one. Although it is not the main road, it is situated quite prominently on a road joining the main road, which also receives a lot of traffic in terms of people. It is one of the only chemists on that road, thus catering to a lot to the residential areas around.

Yet, it is not enough and business is slow. That’s why he is not your average chemist any more. His pharmacy is part department store with certain food products, chocolates and biscuits, and even dog food. He also keeps Kwality Walls ice-cream, which sells only in certain seasons. He depends upon the students in the area to keep his ice-cream selling even in the slack seasons.

Apart from all this, he provides courier service and has a pay-phone outside his shop.

Soon we found ourselves wandering around our usual hangout place near Aroma when we thought of what all we relate as land marks in our locality . We traced our vision from Aroma bakery to Shanti Sagar and soon our heads lifted towards the pink board that held an imposing name ‘ Glamour’ . The woman dominated uni-sex saloon . So we found ourselves walking in for a little chit-chat and a hair cut .

The owner Shaina founded the place the previous year that is 2008 with her cousin who are both trained and certified by Shwartzkoff , and are both residents of SFS colony . The 2 ambitious Malayali cousins began the business with a heavy investment of Rs. 10 Lakhs which was taken on a loan .They have 4 women and a man helper who are well trained and hold very friendly realtions with their customers . It holds the title of being the only qualified saloon in Yelahanka and is popular due to the usage of branded products and the latest technology in the business . As a result of which it often attracts most of the young generation in and around Yelahanka . Apart from the normal parlour services , it offers tattoo and piercing services and has recently opened a waxing cabin for men as well. Glamour ensures the use of only branded products and technology to beautify their customers outlook .

The very opening , of glamour saw itself gain regular customers due to its own neat , decent outlook . Glamour also enjoys the benefits of being in a highly commercial locality and has favoured itself by the right kind of endorsement board which is hard to miss while passing the place .

Initially they followed a strategy through which they provided their expertise services for cheap with 40rupees for hair cuts and today , its the increased number of customers have helped them stash more by increasing their prices for quality services . They even tried bringing in attractive offers of chocolate massages for 300 or free t- shirts for a thousands waxing package although they did not work out much .

The place gets around 5 customers on a daily basis and earns around a 1000 on an average . Although , they call their business seasonal , as most of the customers land up during the wedding seasons during which they business booms to almost 10,000 rupees per day .

The parlour does not re-use any of its products to ensure a germ – free atmosphere , and utilizes most of the quality devices to ensure the same . The parlour although practises giving away long hair ( remains of haircuts ) to a certain woman for free to make wigs and the short hair is simple thrown away .

Although , people have begun complaining about the increased prices at the glamouress place it still maintains a steady number of customers who can’t rely on any other parlour in the locality due to the lack of professionalism that Glamour offers and hence it survives on profits today.

The Lakshmipati paanwaala sells only pan, cigarrettes and sweets. Sells an average of 6- 7 packs of cigarrettes a day and 20 to 25 pans. Good customer relationship has ensured regular customers. Also, the vendor is a marwadi, so many of the northerners like the pan he makes. He gets the cigarrettes delivered to him in bulk from the city.Mainly stocks ciggarettes that the local population goes for rather than expensive ones. In a day he earns more out of pan than off cigarrettes. His skill comes in his expertise at making pan.

The selling of.....

The making of.....

The D day
We decided to go ahead with the matchboxes idea. We used popular culture inpired designs like,
iconic rockstars and anime characters also aesthetically pleasing psychedelic designs.

We went to brigade road to find our consumers as it is usually filled with youngsters who would have more liking to this kind of art.

We started off by selling the psychedelic designs for 10 to 20 bucks each.We would first assess the consumer before approaching him to see what design he might be interested in and also how much he will be willing to pay for it. for eg: the designs we were selling for only twenty was bought for 50 bucks by a matchbox collector.

We finally sold all our matchboxes for a total of 920 bucks. Minus the cost of the matchbox it was a profit of 870 bucks for us.
  1. Buy matchboxes for 50 paise each, handpaint them and sell them for a profit.
  2. Go door to door in neighborhoods and offer to do photoshoping work for their portraits.
  3. Get slapped for twenty bucks each.
  4. Organise a gaming tournament.
and on and on and on....hopefully...one of them will work
